Educational Technologies for Spring 2026
Posted in News
As we look forward to the Spring term, please look at new developments in educational technologies and training opportunities at Georgetown.
Self-Paced AI Training Available
Explore the Georgetown Applied AI Microcredential for Georgetown faculty, staff and students. This course is meant to help you make thoughtful, informed choices about AI in your teaching, learning and research practices. You’ll explore how artificial intelligence intersects with these three areas. You may take the full course, assign it to students or use individual modules in your own teaching or work. Those who successfully complete all modules and assignments can earn a digital badge and/or a transcript notation.
Canvas Updates
Strange Results in Canvas Letter Grades
Professors have noticed discrepancies in how Canvas calculates a final course grade as a letter grade. If you use final letter grades in your Canvas courses, you should read the linked blog post above, as it provides guidance for setting the letter grades up correctly.
New Filters in the Canvas Gradebook
You can now filter by course section, which is helpful for dividing combined courses so TAs and professors can see and grade only their own students. Several other new and useful filters are now available.
YouTube Ads in Canvas
Canvas used to pay Google to remove ads and suggested videos from all YouTube clips shared in Canvas. That arrangement has ended. Unfortunately, due to technical limitations, Google cannot offer Georgetown a similar service. Therefore, YouTube videos linked in your Canvas courses will display ads and suggested videos to students and faculty.
Zoom Conferencing Tool and Photo Roster Need Chrome Permissions
Google changed the settings of its Chrome browser, so that users logged in from Georgetown Internet or VPN need to grant permission to access local devices to access web applications hosted on Georgetown servers, such as the Zoom Conferencing Tool and Photo Roster. You can grant the permission in Chrome, and if you already denied the permission, you can see this post to change your Chrome settings for the Georgetown Canvas website. We are considering changing these tools so they will open in a separate browser tab, removing the need for the permission.
Check out the list of external apps in Canvas
Do you want to use an app that’s not on the list or in the Canvas App Center? Submit this Google form, and we’ll assess its feasibility as a tool to be integrated with Canvas.
Classroom Technology Contacts
Georgetown schools and campuses have the following separate points of contact for classroom technology needs:
- Hilltop Campus: Contact Classroom Education Technology Services (CETS): cets@georgetown.edu or call 202-687-7491. Check this list to find out which CETS technician to contact for the building where you will be teaching. CETS can meet with you for one-on-one instruction in your classroom, ideally before the first day of class.
- McDonough School of Business (Hariri Building): Contact: msbhelp@georgetown.edu
- School of Medicine: Contact help@georgetown.edu. For urgent issues requiring immediate classroom assistance, call 202-687-4949 and select option six.
- Capitol Campus: Contact caphelp@georgetown.edu, and also watch for communications from IST.
Training and Consultations on Teaching, Technology and Teaching With Technology
Faculty and staff can reach out to CNDLS for help with effective and practical teaching techniques, ranging from pedagogical choices to implementing technology tools. For quick help, “Ring our Doorbell” by filling out this form, and a CNDLS staff member will reach out to schedule a consultation within the hour. More information is available at cndls.georgetown.edu.
To scale campus-wide support, we invite you to engage with the CNDLS Digital Learning and Technology Assistants (DLTA) program. Our trained undergraduate assistants, available when school is in session, offer in-person and remote support at the Digital Learning and Technology Lab (ICC 224). The DLTA team can help faculty integrate AI tools into teaching, incorporate digital tools like Mentimeter and Canvas, provide Canvas course setup assistance and offer technology support for students.
