Guides for Integrated Tools in Canvas

Faculty can use integrated tools to build upon and enhance the native features in Canvas.

This page contains guides for integrated tools (also called LTI, external, or third-party tools and apps) that have been reviewed and approved for use at Georgetown University. Most integrated tools will need to be enabled in the course menu, however not all tools will display a link in course menu. Some are only enabled when using Assignments or Modules, or in the Rich Content Editor (RCE). Check out the sections below for information on how to enable integrated tools, what tools are available, and where to get help with specific tools.

Please note that the Georgetown help desk cannot support all integrated tools within Canvas. While we are dedicated to providing an effective online space for teaching and learning, the integrated tools that Canvas makes available are too numerous for us to adequately support. If you experience difficulty using the tools listed below, please click on the tool name and find the ‘Get Help’ or ‘Support’ link associated with the particular tool; and advise your students to do the same.

How do I enable integrated tools in Canvas?

Here’s how to enable tools in the various areas of your course:

Tools Under Review

The following tool(s) are currently being evaluated, and are not yet ready to be installed in Canvas:

Tool Name and Description
nClass is an application for desktop and mobile to facilitate and enhance classroom learning.

Request a Tool

Do you have a tool that has an integration to Canvas? We can make that happen!

Integrated tools can be used in individual courses, across courses in a particular school or department, or for all courses in Canvas; but they must first be configured by Georgetown Canvas admins. Teachers, designers, and TAs in Canvas do not have permissions to add new Integrated tools in courses. Georgetown Canvas admins will configure new Integrated tools only when a review of the tool, including a data security and privacy review have been made.

Since Integrated tools in Canvas can send data, such as student-identifying information and student grade data, to third-party or vendor systems, it is critical to ensure that sharing any data with third-party systems via Canvas is done securely and in accordance with University policies to preserve ownership of the data, safeguard confidentiality and integrity, and protect students’ rights. Also, any tool that is widely used at the university needs to have documented compliance with our accessibility policies.

We encourage faculty members to start their requests as early as possible and well before the semester starts. Working with vendors to complete required agreements can take weeks and even months; please plan accordingly, and make your request as far in advance as possible.

REQUEST A CANVAS TOOL OR FEATURE

Note: Prior to any contracts being signed by any GU department or entity, UIS must be given access to the requested tool in order to complete a thorough review and analysis.
