Moving from Blackboard to Canvas

Presenter: Peter Janssens, CNDLS
The goal of this workshop is to introduce faculty who are familiar with Blackboard to Canvas and to help them understand the functional differences between the two platforms. The workshop will address the following questions:
  • What are the core differences between Canvas and Blackboard?
  • How might moving to Canvas change my course design, the way I communicate with students, and the way students get the course materials and do their work?
Participants will:
  • Recognize the core functional differences between Blackboard and Canvas
  • Identify ways to organize a course in Canvas
  • Learn about the various communication tools in Canvas
  • Become aware of how students use Canvas to access course content and do course work

Getting Started with Canvas

Presenters: UIS Educational Technologies Team

Following a quick overview of what Canvas is and what is involved in making the switch to Canvas, this session will explain:


  • How content can be added and managed

  • How assignments are created, submitted, and graded

  • How to use the calendar to schedule class sessions, events, and appointments

  • How to communicate with students using announcements, conversations, and notifications


Canvas Fundamentals

Presenters: UIS Educational Technologies Team

This session builds on the Getting Started with Canvas session to take a more in-depth look at Canvas’s features. You will also learn how to:

  • Combine (cross-list) Canvas courses

  • Add people to your course

  • Create groups

  • Create quizzes and assessments

  • View learning analytics


Canvas at Georgetown: Faculty Panel

Moderator: Peter Janssens, CNDLS

A panel of Georgetown faculty members will discuss their adoption of Canvas. The following questions will be addressed:


  • Why did you decide to use Canvas?

  • How did the adoption go?

  • How did it change the way you teach?

  • What challenges did you encounter?

  • What did you learn in the process?


Designing a Course in Canvas

Presenter: Peter Janssens, CNDLS

This workshop will present faculty with ways to organize their course in Canvas and to optimize it for student learning, engagement, and assessment.


The following topics will be addressed:


  • How do you want students navigate your course?

  • How can you organize your course’s content?

  • How can students do course work in Canvas?

  • How can students collaborate in Canvas?

  • How can you use Canvas to assess students’ work?


Participants will learn:


  • How to use the home page and modules to present and organize course content

  • How to use the Canvas calendar and Inbox

  • How to use assignments and the gradebook


Taking Canvas Further

Presenters: Instructure Staff, UIS Educational Technologies Team

Presenters from Instructure (the company that makes Canvas) and the UIS Educational Technologies Team the will share features, tools, and resources to make your Canvas course more interactive and engaging for your students.


Teaching with Canvas: Faculty Examples
